Michael Gross ('87)
CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Solar Capital Ltd. and Solar Senior Capital Ltd.
Michael has 25 years of experience in private equity, distressed debt, and mezzanine lending. He is CEO, Chairman, and a founder of Solar Capital, (Nasdaq: SLRC) and Solar Senior Capital (Nasdaq: SUNS), business development companies providing primarily debt-financing to sponsor-owned, U.S. middle-market companies. Since founding Solar Capital in 2007 and Solar Senior Capital in 2011, Michael, as co-chair of the franchise’s investment committee, has overseen investments totaling over $4.2 billion in over 160 companies to more than 140 financial sponsors. Michael is based in New York.
Between 2004 and 2006, Michael was CEO and Chairman of Apollo Investment Corporation (Nasdaq: AINV), a business development company which he founded. In addition, he is a founder and former senior partner of Apollo Management, L.P., a leading private equity firm. During his tenure at Apollo, he was a member of the investment committee responsible for $13 billion invested in over 150 companies in the U.S. and Western Europe. Michael had primary responsibility for Apollo’s debt-oriented activities and was managing partner of Apollo Distressed Investment Fund, which he formed in 2003. From 1987 to 1990, Mr. Gross worked in mergers and acquisitions at Drexel Burnham Lambert.
He currently serves on the board of directors of Jarden Corporation and Global Ship Lease Inc. He also serves on the board of: Mt. Sinai Pediatrics Foundation, The Trinity School, Kellogg Global Advisory Board and the Ross BBA Advisory Board.
Michael earned a BBA in Accounting from the University of Michigan and an MM from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
