KFN Speaker Series - September 12th

Fireside chat with Kellogg alumni, Harry Kraemer, Jr., ('79), interviewing Matt Forti ('06), Managing Director,  One Acre Fund

About One Acre Fund:

The Enemy: Hunger

No matter how far the human race has advanced, one of our most embarrassing failures is our inability to properly feed every member of our race. Even today, in an age of unprecedented prosperity, 214 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa are undernourished.[1]

We see a future where every farm family has the knowledge, materials, and support necessary to satisfy their basic needs. At One Acre Fund, our vision is to become one of the world's most impactful organizations and to serve millions of farm families to eradicate poverty and chronic hunger.

> learn how One Acre Fund, a truly Kellogg-incubated nonprofit, has grown from 40 to more than 500,000 farm families reached in its first decade
> learn how One Acre Fund is using business principles to solve one of the planet's most intractable problems - how to end chronic hunger and poverty among the 70% of the world's poor still dependent on family farms for their incomes.

> help brainstorm One Acre Fund's optimal financial model  from a budget of $100M and growing only upwards, as one of the world's largest social enterprises.

About our speakers:

Harry Kraemer, Jr. is professor of management and strategy at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, where he teaches in the MBA and the Executive MBA programs. Additionally, he is an executive partner with Madison Dearborn Partners (MDP), one of the largest private equity firms in the United States where he consults with CEOs and other senior executives of companies in MDP’s extensive portfolio. Harry is the former chairman and chief executive officer of Baxter International Inc., a multi-billion-dollar global healthcare company. He was voted by the students at Kellogg as the Professor of the Year in 2008 and was a finalist for the award in 2014.

Harry Kraemer’s involovment with the One Acre Fund began in 2011, shortly after his book, From Values to Action, was published and he met the One Acre Fund founder, Andrew Youn. When Andrew returned to Kellogg for his fifth year reunion, Harry chose him to be a guest speaker in his class. After class, Harry recalled telling Andrew, “You know what, you are the best possible example of From Values to Action.  You’re living it.” So Harry told Youn that he would donate all the proceeds from the book to the One Acre Fund, and when he wasn’t teaching, or on a board meeting, once a month Harry would give a talk, and all the proceeds from those talks would also go towards the One Acre Fund.

That was in 2011, and while Harry vowed to do one talk a month, the number has grown to about two hundred!

Matthew Forti is managing director, One Acre Fund USA, where he leads the organization’s work outside of Africa and helps oversee its measurement and evaluation function.  Matt is also advisor to the Performance Measurement Capability Area at the Bridgespan Group (@BridgespanGroup), an advisory firm to mission-driven leaders and organizations that supports the design of performance measurement systems for continuous learning and improvement.
